“It feels like you’re on a sinking ship, but regardless of how fast you swim or run, the water keeps rising. Eventually, the water fully swallows you. You try to keep fighting, but eventually you swallow too much.” — Maddison S.

Sorely unaware is the problem, purely unaddressed is the issue. Like it or not, we are marred by an unrelenting societal concern kept hidden from the public eye. Domestic violence has contrived its way into many a relationship or household and threatens to devastate not only individuals, but also families and communities alike. Which begs the question: how much longer are we to linger amidst the FOG?

This ominous F.O.G. alludes to the three central principles of Emotional Blackmail – a strand within domestic violence highly prevalent in Hong Kong and also the cornerstone of this choreographic research. (F)ear, (O)bligation and (G)uilt are major constituents of an environment tainted with blackmail and obsessive control, where a victimiser and victim mutually contribute to the intoxication of a relationship. The victimisers often demand emotional security from his or her counterpart whilst being insensitive towards their personal needs. They tend to capitalise on the victim’s vulnerability and emotional debt to the former, acting upon a precariousness apparent only in the latter. Once ambiguity and anxiety are aggravated, the victim then spirals into a suicidal abyss as one’s existential purpose becomes increasingly undermined.

Amidst the F.O.G brings out the hidden stories within my life.

The subtle things I couldn’t tell anyone but myself.

The subtle things people couldn’t see unless I voiced out.

The subtle things I give in, hoping that it would be the best choice for my life.

But then triggers who I am today.

By learning from harsh and complicated ways, I then slowly took a step forward.

Day by day, I learn to accept and appreciate the circumstances I’m in.

Hoping that one day when I look back, it would always be a pleasant journey.

This collaboration with my performers and team members has brought me on board an exquisite and loving trip.

The support from everyone’s comfort and agony provided a healing process for all of us.

An understanding which creates the strength to move forward in our life journey.

Thank you all for _______ me.
